Toads taken from Spur Cross

Photo by Maricopa County Parks and Recreation

Thieves entered the Spur Cross Conservation Area and stole Sonoran Desert Toads from the riparian area. A wildlife camera did manage to get some video of the perpetrators. The toads are not endangered but can excrete a toxin to defend themselves. Some people have been known to lick the toads as the toxin may affect a person similar to a psychedelic drug. In addition to breaking County Law by being in the area after hours and creating vandalism, collecting the toads also violates state law, as a license is required to catch wildlife.
