Carefree celebrates Memorial Day

The Carefree Memorial Day tribute was a somber event and wonderfully done. Emotions often showed in the eyes and voices of the speakers as well as the faces of the attendees. The event which was organized by Councilman Michael Farrar featured a list of speakers including most of the members of the Carefree Town Council and Mayor.

The event began with a parade of American Legion Riders in Arizona Patriot Guard Riders around the Carefree Desert Gardens. Vice Mayor John Crane in the prologue to leading The Pledge of Allegiance honored the memory of Colonel Blaine Keith who recently passed away. Colonel Keith had originally been slated to lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

Music was supplied by the Cactus Shadows High School band. A number of retired and active duty military personnel honor their fallen comrades and friends in speeches that were loaded with emotion. I will not try to quote what they said because the written word lacks the spirit, energy, emotion, and sadness that was being conveyed.

A wreath ceremony representing all five of the armed services brought the session to a close. Patriotism and tears continued to flow even after the last wreath was set.
