Phoenix native returns home with U.S. Navy Band Sea Chanters

WASHINGTON –Senior Chief Musician Adam Tyler is coming home to Phoenix March 8-12 on tour with the United States Navy Band Sea Chanters chorus. The Phoenix area was chosen to host four of the 14 concerts in three states by the U.S. Navy Band Sea Chanters during their 2018 tour — one of the Navy’s signature outreach programs.

The U.S. Navy Band Sea Chanters performances in the area are scheduled for March 8, 2018, at 7 p.m. at the Happy Trails Resort Ballroom in Surprise; March 9, 2018, at 7:30 p.m. at the Del E. Webb Center for the Performing Arts in Wickenburg; March 11, 2018, at 6 p.m. at Casas Church in Tucson; and March 12, 2018, at 6 p.m. at the Sun Bowl Amphitheater in Sun City.

Originally from Phoenix, Arizona, Tyler earned a Bachelor of Music in vocal performance from Northern Arizona University in 1996 with an emphasis in opera and musical theater. His vocal instructors include Judith Cloud and Judy May-Selheim. He performed with numerous professional theater companies prior to joining the Navy Band in 2000, including the Grand Canyon Shakespeare Festival in Flagstaff, Arizona, the Moonlight Theater Company in San Diego, the Canyon Moon Theater Company in Sedona, Arizona, and the Phoenix Theater Company in Phoenix.

Tyler has been actively involved in choral music in the Washington, D.C., area. He has been a vocalist with “Brethren,” an all-male contemporary Christian ensemble comprised of professional singers from the Washington area. In addition, he has worked as a church musician for 17 years. He was a cantor at St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Arlington, Virginia, for three years and has served as the staff piano accompanist at Annandale United Methodist Church. Tyler serves as the unit leader of the Sea Chanters.

The U.S. Navy Band Sea Chanters is the official chorus of America’s Navy. The ensemble performs a variety of music ranging from traditional choral music, including sea chanteys and patriotic fare, to opera, Broadway, and contemporary music. The Sea Chanters chorus is frequently found at the center of high-profile national events. At home in Washington, the group performs for the president, vice president, and numerous congressional, military and foreign dignitaries.

One of the U.S. Navy Band’s primary responsibilities involves touring the country. All of the band’s primary performing units embark each year on concert tours throughout specified regions of the country, allowing the band to reach out to audiences in areas of the country that do not have opportunities to see the Navy’s premier musical ensembles on a regular basis. The concerts are family-friendly events, meant to be entertaining to veterans, families, individuals and those interested in joining the Navy.

All Navy Band performances are free and open to the public.
