A Duet: Musicfest @ the Desert Foothills Library

The Library hosts the 7th annual performance of a Duet. Maestro Robert Moody is joined by vocalist Alice Tatum and musicians including Nicole Pesce and Hannah Goldstick. There will be Prosecco, coffee and dessert prior to the performance courtesy of the English Rose Tea Room. The fee of $30 for this event benefits the Library and AZMusicfest, both non-profit organizations.

Around the World in 9 Films: the Best in International Cinema

Movies are a great way to learn about different cultures — how people live, love, laugh, and cope with hardships and tragedy. This series will explore films from nine different countries, each one telling the story of individuals caught up in conflicts unique to their culture and country and yet, at the same time, linking a thread of humanity that stretches across the globe. A post-film discussion, facilitated by Gary Zaro, Humanities Professor from Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC), will follow. This Month: The Farewell Party (95 min.). Cinematic Reflections on WWI: The 100th Anniversary

Inevitable, but also easily avoidable, World War I is one of the most tragic and unique wars in history. This series will highlight films that define the triumphs, tragedies, innovations, and sacrifices in what was hailed as ‘The War to End All Wars.’ WWI will ultimately cause WWII and shape the entire 20th Century. International travel writer and photographer, Paula Cullison, will speak about her current photography exhibit on Ireland and take you along on a fabulous trip via PowerPoint Presentation. An independent traveler, Paula has visited over 36 countries. Best Place in the Country: Military Training in Arizona during World War II

Arizona had some of the largest pilot and gunnery training facilities in the world during World War II. There were over 60 airfields to train pilots, bombardiers, aerial gunners and navigators. Speaker Steve Hoza will present artifacts as well as many first-person stories from the men and women who trained for war in air, right here in Arizona. One lucky attendee will be randomly selected to receive a free, signed copy of Chameleons: An Untold World War II Story by Marcus A. Nannini. Register: 480-488-2286.

Through his presentation, speaker Donald Pearman Jr. will share his month long travel ventures in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Meet the people away from the urban areas — especially the Maasai. Holiday Science with Mrs. Claus

Children ages 3 to 6 are invited to those fun, free holiday event featuring a visit from Mrs. Claus who will delight little ones with her stories and magic. Mrs. Claus will entertain your children ages 2½ to 6 from 10:30 to 11:15am. Photos may be taken with her to follow. Join us afterwards for cookie decorating, followed by a holiday science party with special guest: Amy Oyler, author & mother who will offer a wide array of kid-friendly, hands-on holiday-themed experiments with a K12 associate. Bridge: Supervised Play

One half hour demonstration of play, and bidding AND play of a pre-dealt hand. Balance of the class will be bidding and play of randomly dealt hands with help from the instructor. Registration is limited to the first 12 people. Instructor: Peter Blake-Ward. Register: 480-488-2286.

Bridge: Skill Building

For players with some experience who would like to improve their skills, you will develop bridge skills and strategies and socialize. Supervised play will help illustrate more advanced conventions as they are taught. If participants are interested, the instructor will teach the “new’ standard in bridge – the 2 over 1 style of play.
