In Phoenix, a new plan is being rolled out to take care of issues with homelessness to help improve neighborhoods, protect property owners and their rights, and help those in need.
The plan is being called the “PHX C.A.R.E.S.” program. It creates one comprehensive plan to combat chronic homelessness and provides the community with one phone number to call if they have a case to report regarding the plan.
One large problem that has occurred in the past is that communication surrounding this issue has been poor. The community has done their part in reporting issues but fails to see any action come out of their information.
Chris Hallett, a neighborhood services director, said “We’ve all found out we’re spending a lot of time with no connectivity or collaboration,” referencing the different departments that all try to handle the problems of chronic homelessness. The new program, he says,” wraps all our services together and provides a single point of contact.”
The directive creates a streamlined approach to handling homelessness in Phoenix. There will be one phone number to call for residents and one comprehensive plan to handle the individuals being reached out to. The team will be available and working seven days a week from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.
The services the team offer will be invaluable. They will be providing transportation for homeless persons who need to get to helpful services like shelters and detox. They will also be directing these people through established pipelines and systems that have been proven to pull these people out of severe impoverishment and into a more successful state. The department will also be handling more dangerous situations with the help of police.
