SCOTTSDALE – The ARIZONA SAGE GIFT SHOP is now open in the Holland Community Center Lobby. Arizona artists’ merchandise includes jewelry, etched glass, photography, messenger bags and other artful items for sale at affordable prices. It showcases artists who will be participating in the annual Arizona Sage Art Market, on Feb. 2 & 3, 2018. A portion of sales benefits the Foothills Community Foundation. Hours Open: Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm.

Open Studio Painting with Instruction 1:30 – 3:30 PM

Beyond paint-along, this class shows you the next steps towards improving your technique. This is a 4-week workshop series for the beginning painter in an open-studio format, but with semi-private instruction and support. You will study composition, values, perspective, color mixing, and brushwork. Materials are included. ($160) Register at www.azfcf.org.

Family History Writing 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM (9/16) and 10AM – 12 PM
(10/7, 10/ 21 & 11/4)

#1: Write Your Family Members to Life (9/16) – (In this active workshop session, come with a family member in mind to write about and learn strategies to bring him or her to life!) – $38

#2: Telling the Story Behind Your Family Artifacts (10/7) – (Artifacts tell us stories if we listen: stories about our family heritage & values, or ones with deep personal meaning. Bring a picture of an artifact or the artifact itself and your presenter will lead you through steps and strategies for writing a personal essay about your cherished artifact.) – ($25)

#3: Writing Your Ancestor’s Everyday Life World (10/21) – (In this workshop, participants will learn how to select and integrate details evoking the historical and social settings of their family history essays and stories. Through the writing techniques and strategies presented in this workshop, you will learn how to weave together researched and family document details to create a believable and humanizing life world around your ancestors.) – ($25)

#4: Writing Captivating Vignettes for your Family History (11/4)
Vignettes are narratives with a point and a clear beginning, middle and end. They are about real-life people and events. These will not be impersonal biographies, but will be about a family character experiencing an internal shift during an external event in a specific time and place. – ($25)

Instructor Cynthia Kiefer is a 20+ year teaching veteran with expertise in teaching writing, literature, and research to students of all ages. In addition to her passion for teaching, she is an American history buff, artifact aficionado, and historical fiction writer and researcher. In addition to teaching full time, Cynthia is currently writing a historical fiction novel. Not surprisingly, this novel concept began with a long-gone family member.

Beginning Mahjongg I

Want to learn how to play Mahjongg? Whether you have never played or simply want a refresher, this 4-week class is for you! Mahjongg cards must be purchased on own before first session. They are available at a number of places including the National Mahjongg League, www.nationalmahjonggleague.org. Instructor Cindi Ginn has taught Mahjongg at several local country clubs, and currently plays with a regular group from Terravita. $90 for 4-week instruction. Register at www.azfcf.org. Experimental Watermedia

Multi-media artist Sue Hunter, teaches an introduction to various techniques for creating exciting paintings by exploring numerous products. Week one, design with Masking Fluid Pens on watercolor paper and yupo. Week two, use watercolor or acrylics or both, on the tar gel paper you prepared in week one and then apply black gesso to the background. Week three, create stencil stamps using hot air blowers and material. And week four, use the stencils and molding paste to create texture. Each week will include a demonstration of the products and you will learn new techniques of producing creative paintings. 4-week course; $225.00 includes instruction. Alcohol Ink Prints
Multi-media artist, Sue Hunter, teaches that alcohol inks are an easy and interesting way to create works of art. In this class, you will be shown how to freeform using easy techniques for applying highly pigmented inks to special paper. As the inks flow and mingle, they create remarkable effects that can be controlled with brushes to create abstract prints or realistic paintings. 2-week course for $125.00 includes all art supplies. Morning Joe with TED 9:00 – 11:00 AM
Fresh coffee and hot topics! Nothing beats a fresh cup of coffee and gathering with interesting people. This is 8 month series, and each month a different topic will be explored through the TED talks medium, which consists of a short video (20 min.), with host, Mark Sweeney, facilitating conversation afterwards.
