Daisy Mountain Fire Chief Mark Nichols made the announcement. The Black Canyon Fire Board unanimously voted to execute a resolution of consolidation with Daisy Mountain Fire District. Just one night earlier, the Daisy Mountain Fire Board also voted unanimously to execute a resolution of consolidation with Black Canyon. Chief Nichols stated, “Its official that the two districts are now one.”

Because this is a consolidation, the Black Canyon Fire Board was dissolved May 25. “The official consolidation date is July 1st,” Nichols said, “so we have already begun training Black Canyon firefighters on the Phoenix Regional Automatic Aid System.” This is the same standard used by Daisy Mountain and approximately 28 other area fire departments.

Black Canyon has four full time employees, who will immediately be hired by Daisy Mountain. Jeff Pavlik, one of the Black Canyon firefighters said, “We are excited about this consolidation moving forward, providing stability for the firefighters and the communities.”

According to Nichols, one of our challenges is to boost the staffing at the Black Canyon Station. We will be doing three-man staffing until January, after which we’ll be moving to the customary four-man staffing. The Black Canyon Station is expected to become Fire Station 143, and will be Daisy Mountain’s fifth station. Nichols went on to say “This has been a one year process, and now that we have consolidated, the real work will now begin. Thanks to the many people that helped support this endeavor.”
