Zika Virus Update – September 9, 2016

Zika Case Count: As of September 7, there were more than 18,800 confirmed cases of Zika virus in U.S. States and Territories.

  • 2,964 confirmed cases of Zika in U.S. States and District of Columbia.
  • 15,869 confirmed cases of Zika in U.S. Territories.

Pregnant women with evidence of Zika virus: As of September 1, there were more than 1,750 pregnant women with evidence of Zika virus.

  • 671 pregnant women in U.S. States and District of Columbia.
  • 1,080 pregnant women in U.S. Territories.

As of September 2, 2016, HHS has obligated a total of $311 million of the $374 million redirected in April for the domestic Zika response.

Zika News:

  • HHS accelerates development of mRNA-based Zika vaccine: On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response announced an $8.2 million contract award to Moderna Therapeutics of Cambridge, Massachusetts, to help speed the development of a novel vaccine to prevent the spread of the Zika virus.
  • HHS awards $350,000 to American Academy of Pediatrics to help children affected by the Zika Virus: On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced a $350,000 supplement to a one year cooperative agreement with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to help expand capacity for caring for children who are or may be impacted by the Zika virus.
