Find explosives? Call 911

carefree fire station

CAREFREE – There was quite a bit of commotion last Friday evening surrounding the Carefree Fire Station when a man, who wanted to dispose of what he believed were explosives, dropped them off at the station.

The man said he was going through his father’s things and came across what appeared to be blasting caps.

He thought the safest way to get rid of what he believed to be dynamite was to take it to the local fire station.

Fire Chief John Kraetz said that is never a good idea and asked citizens who come across what they suspect are explosives or other hazardous materials to leave them where they are and call 911 or the local law enforcement agency.

The fire station was evacuated and the area cordoned off until the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad arrived with a robot that placed the device in an explosives box to safely remove it from the fire station.
